RETZER NATURE CENTER

Retzer Nature Center is operated by the Waukesha County Park & Recreation Dept. and consists of 335-acres of diverse habitat areas with hiking and nature trails. The Nature Center building offers nature displays, gift shop, meeting rooms, lab, greenhouse, workroom, and restrooms. Environmental education and specialty workshops are offered year-round on a regular basis. There is no admission fee to the center. It opens sunrise to 10 p.m. The visitor center hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. For more information about current programs call (262) 896-8007.

LAPHAM PEAK STATE PARK

Lapham Peak State Park is operated by the Wisconsin State Parks and Forest system. It is located ¾ mile south of I-94 near the City of Delafield on County Highway C. Lapham Peak State Park includes a picnic area with a reservable enclosed shelter, a 45-foot observation tower (highest point in Waukesha County), miles of hiking trails, cross-country ski trails (including lighted trails for night skiing), mountain bike trails, & horse and snowshoe trails, which wind through wooded hills and open meadows. A portion of the park includes a section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The park is also located 2 miles north of the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, a 47-mile bicycle trail.

GLACIAL-DRUMLIN RECREATIONAL TRAIL

The Glacial Drumlin Trail is a 47-mile trail developed in 1986 on an abandoned railroad grade. It is located in southern Wisconsin between the City of Waukesha in Waukesha County and the Village of Cottage Grove in Dane County. Eight miles of the trail from Waukesha to Wales is paved with asphalt. The remainder of the trail is surfaced with crushed limestone, which is packed to a smooth surface.

Direct access to the Glacial-Drumlin Trail is now available from the new Genesee Sunset Park.

Bicyclists and Roller Bladers 16 years old and older are required to have a state trail pass in order to use the trail. These trail passes are available from private vendors along the trail, from rangers patrolling the trail, and at Lake Kegonsa State Park or the Lapham Peak Unit-Kettle Moraine State Forest Office. Trail passes are required between April 1 and October 31. Fees (2000): $10 annual; $3 daily. (A $5 surcharge is required for failure to purchase pass prior to using trail.)

The trail is open to bicyclists, hikers, and joggers during the summer; and also to snowmobilers and skiers during the winter. Snowmobilers are required to operate at a maximum speed of 15 M.P.H. within any village limit. No ATV’s are permitted on the trail. Hunting is not allowed. Dogs are prohibited in picnic areas and must be kept on a leash at all times.
